Unabated HIV epidemics among gay, bisexual men and other men who have sex with men undermine accelerated HIV services and human rights targets set by the United Nations. MSMGF (the Global Forum on MSM & HIV)’s one-day pre-conference—Action + Access: The Rights and Demands of Gay and Bisexual Men in the Global Response to HIV—will take place on July 16th in the Durban International Convention Centre in collaboration with the International AIDS Society. Action + Access is intended for advocates, program implementers, government officials, and researchers interested in course-correcting the global HIV response toward greater alignment with the sexual health needs of men who have sex with men. Participants will strategize approaches to fast-tracking the HIV and human rights responses. In so doing, Action + Access will shine a spotlight on gay and bisexual men’s community-level contributions to the global HIV response, with special attention given to LGBT movements in Africa and worldwide.

This workshop will serve as an educational platform to engage the community around HIV cure research and provide accessible information on the current research. The three-hour workshop on Saturday morning, open to all, is aimed in particular at community representatives, young researchers, researchers from outside the field and the wider public interested in learning more about the current research directions and challenges for an HIV cure. The interactive workshop will also discuss the research priority areas outlined in the 2016 Global Scientific Strategy: Towards an HIV Cure, to be launched in Durban in July 2016, whilst also serving as a preparatory meeting for those attending the 2016 Towards an HIV Cure Symposium to ensure that the most recent data presented is accessible to all.

The development of highly effective antiviral therapy for HBV and HCV provides the opportunity to counter the rising burden of chronic liver disease among PLHIV. The meeting will focus on identifying opportunities for increased diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis in PLHIV, particularly in low and middle-income settings. Hosted by DENOSA, ICAP at Columbia University, ANAC and ICN, nurses from around the world will convene to celebrate the contribution of nurses and midwives in combating the HIV epidemic. There will be robust discussion on current trends, best practices, issues, and challenges in HIV nursing and midwifery, including topics related to workforce development, regulation, policy, education, and quality of care. Particular attention will be given to developing a priority agenda for nursing workforce strengthening as we aim to achieve UNAIDS 90/90/90 targets.

Division of AIDS (UBC), has coordinated and hosted the International HIV Treatment as Prevention Workshops since 2011. In 2014, the 90-90-90 Target strategy was designed in collaboration with UNAIDS and adopted by the United Nations that September. This strategy calls for 90% of HIV positive diagnoses, 90% of those diagnosed on sustained antiretroviral treatment, and 90% of those on treatment to be virally suppressed by 2020. Following this adoption, the Workshop was renamed the UN 90-90-90 Target Workshop and the Division of AIDS, in collaboration with UNAIDS, will convene a one-day pre-conference event to be held in Durban. The meeting will focus on research, program and policy, implementation, and progress-to-date related to the 90-90-90 Target.

The annual Towards an HIV Cure Symposium will continue to showcase the latest research in HIV cure, aligned with the research priorities outlined in the 2016 Global Scientific Strategy: Towards an HIV Cure, whilst creating a fertile setting for dialogue with the broader community through abstract driven sessions, a poster exhibition, roundtable discussions and a networking reception. The interactive meeting, co-chaired by Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, Steven Deeks, and Sharon Lewin, will cater to senior, mid-career, and junior scientists, clinical researchers, scientific journalists, research funding administrators and community representatives globally.
